OUR BARS

We’ve spent years developing the best possible stretcher bars and are excited to bring our newest hybrid plywood/hardwood design to our clients. Our bars are made in a two-part L-shaped construction forming the back and side (profile) of the bar. This is an ideal design for strength and it also creates a larger setback from the canvas. The back of the bar is Blockboard (also called Lumbercore) which is a plywood made up of a core of finger-jointed vertical grain spruce, glued together edge to edge and sandwiched between veneers of poplar. Being an engineered plywood it is environmentally stable and resistant to warping, and because of its makeup is considered a solid wood product. The side (profile) of our bars are made out of solid Basswood milled down to our specifications. Basswood is a lightweight hardwood that has a fine and uniform grain and is also incredibly stable and naturally resistant to warping. The crossbars of our substrates are also made out of solid Basswood. The result of all this is an extremely lightweight and remarkably strong bar that can be made to any size or shape. The standard profile depth of our bars is 1.5”.

CANVAS

We keep it simple and stock a classic Double Fill Cotton Duck Canvas in weights #12 (11.5oz) and #10 (15oz) primed and unprimed. This is a natural fiber cotton canvas that has been relied on by generations of artists. Our primed option has 3 coats of white acid-free archival gesso sanded to a smooth finish. Every canvas is hand stapled drum tight and gallery wrapped, with traditional “hospital” corners. We do not sell individual yards or rolls of canvas. Our canvas prices include cost of materials plus a stretching fee. We often stretch fabrics that we do not stock and if this is something you’re interested in please use the Quote/Order form to inquire.
